Standard #5: Special Effects & Finishing Techniques

Special Effects, the focus of Volume 5 of The Standard, shows designers how printing can be dimensional, tactile and sometimes interactive. The techniques shown here may look like magic, but many are easy for designers to prepare and can be done inline on a conventional press.

Numerous foil-stamping techniques, embossing/debossing, engraving/thermography, varnish/aqueous/UV coating techniques, strike-through, laser die-cutting, lenticular printing, flocking, and a wide array of specialty inks and spot colors are but a few of the special effects and finishing techniques implemented to make this one of the most unique, educational and inspiring printed pieces to compliment Sappi’s Standard series. All it takes are a few printing tips, the right paper, and letting your imagination go. The Standard #5 from Sappi is an educational reference piece that combines the technical with the creative.

Getting Lean in 2012

Speaker Rick Eberts, Global Lean Coordinator of Energizer Household Products will be speaking on the topics of:
- From the Middle Out – Directing Downwards and Selling Upward
- Lean With a Purpose, Bottom Line Impact
- WWW-EBI – What we’ve done well and what we would have done differently
- Lean in the Administrative World (midsize and larger companies)  – Where the Real Money is!

Who is Rick Eberts you ask?
Rick has worked for Energizer Battery, now Energizer Holdings for 30 years in the Engineering, Operations and Technology sides of the business.  His current position is Global Lean Coordinator, which means he helps direct the efforts of each of our Site Lean Coordinators.  He is also a Master Lean Trainer the organization.

Energizer has the typical large company story of Lean with what has affectionately been termed, “From the Middle Out” meaning the Operations Group sees the benefits, learns, sells it upward and from there learn and continue to sell downward and upward.  The group has officially been on the journey for 8 years and have seen many organizations around the world.  “Today, I can honestly say we are better than many we have seen, but we still struggle to push a Lean culture all the way through our entire enterprise,” says Rick.

Presidents Message

Dear Members and Fellow Craftsman,

I am excited to be the President of the board this year and want to welcome all of your to join and participate in our club.  We have an exciting year planned with many great meetings in store for
the year.

We have a wonderful group of people that have graciously volunteered their time to be on our Board of Directors this year.   There are several new faces that will bring new ideas as we continue to build and grow our club in there trying times.

We started off the year with our Meet the Board event at Sarah’s Vineyard, we had great showing and it was a fun night, great food, wine and networking.  As most of us face the challenges of working longer hours with few staff members, events like this help bring us together to realize that we are all in this together.

I hope that everyone will take advantage of things that our club has to offer throughout the year and I hope that all of you will join us at the Ben Franklin Ball and Silent Auction.  We have a new venue for this year’s event and I think it will be a great night of fun, awards and most of all seeing who will win the Best of Show!

My goal for this year is to increase membership and continue to educate the future generation so that our club can continue to provide services for many years to come to the entire North East Ohio area.

I look forward to meeting all of your personally at one of our upcoming events!
